You are worried about a teammate on your football team. He has always been a sociable sort and always up for spending time with teammates. He has always appeared to be a “happy-go-lucky” type and the life and soul of the party.
However, recently you have noticed a change in him. He seems to be more withdrawn and goes straight home when he can. He looks stressed and always seems to be a bit distracted. You have also noticed changes in his physical appearance, he looks tired and often is unshaven.
You ask him is he okay? He says he’s just having a hard time at home at the minute, but it will all work out.
What action would/could you take?
What we SAY!
- Look for opportunities to check in and talk privately. Tell him you’ve been worried about him.
- Listen without judgment and if he doesn’t want to talk, let him know you’ll be there for him if he ever does.
- If he discloses abuse, let him know you believe him.
- Encourage him to speak to an adult he trusts.
- Direct him to support e.g.childline. Let him know there is always support out there.
- Look for opportunities to build his self-esteem.
- Just be there for him if and when he needs you.
