You are at a family christening party, you can hear an older relative making comments that are offensive to the LGBTQIA+ community in general conversation. Some people are laughing with him, others say nothing and look away.
Encouraged by the laughter, he continues with his tirade and the comments become more offensive and derogatory. This person has made similar comments previously and you have also heard him make racist comments on occasion.
This is uncomfortable and it’s not right.
What action would/could you take?
What we SAY!
- You could speak up by saying things like “I don’t think is funny”, “These comments are offensive”.
- You could show your disapproval in your facial expressions and body language.
- You could discourage the others in your group from laughing or joining in.
- These types of harassing behaviours help foster an environment that promotes homophobia in our society.
