You are at a school pre-formal. Everyone seems to be having a good time until you see a guy talking to a girl in a way that concerns you. He is holding her by the wrist, and she seems to be pulling away. He won’t let go. The girl is laughing, but it appears to be out of nervousness rather than enjoyment.
Although you can’t hear what’s being said, you think that the guy may be trying to push the girl into leaving with him. You can see that both people are pretty drunk.
What action would/could you take?
What we SAY!
- Carefully consider whether to intervene. Is there any risk to you?
- Enlist supporters. Enlisting supporters, like a mutual friend, the bartender or a bouncer is safer than trying to go it alone.
- You (along with your supporter) could ask if everything is okay. Draw attention to the situation and let it be known it has been noticed.
- Don’t leave. By remaining present, you can help to diffuse the situation or prevent the situation escalating .
- IMPORTANT: If you think intervening will put you in danger at any time, enlist help.
